The Meta Quest 3 Sale is Here: Why Now is the Time to Upgrade in South Africa

Introduction

Virtual reality (VR) is a transformative technology that simulates realistic 3D environments within a confined space, facilitated by a compact headset. While these headsets can operate independently, many can also connect to computers or consoles for enhanced performance. Most units come with standard controllers for individual left and right-hand interaction, though newer models increasingly feature advanced built-in hand tracking.

A Brief History of the Meta Quest

The Meta Quest headset was first introduced in May 2019, revolutionizing the standalone VR market. Since then, the lineup has seen significant evolution. The Meta Quest 2, released in October 2020, was positively received by the global market. It featured an upgraded processor, higher screen resolution, a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, and redefined touch controllers. To date, the Quest 2 remains one of the most successful headsets in the Meta lineup.

In October 2022, Meta released the high-end Meta Quest Pro. However, the spotlight is now on the current generation: the Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S.

Quest 3 vs. Quest 3S

The Meta Quest 3S is the latest release (2024), serving as a budget-friendly introduction to the lineup. It utilizes older Fresnel-type lenses with slightly lower resolution and lacks a dedicated headphone jack. Nonetheless, it remains an excellent entry point into VR.

In contrast, the Meta Quest 3 offers the premium experience. It features a sleeker build with upgraded Pancake lenses for superior clarity and higher resolution. Interestingly, both the Quest 3 and Quest 3S share the same powerful processor, ensuring smooth performance across both devices.

Buying Meta Quest in South Africa

Despite its success, the Meta Quest is officially supported by Meta in only 23 countries. Unfortunately, South Africa is not on this list—another example of our region being neglected in terms of technology access. However, thanks to the grit and determination of local distributors, there is a booming parallel import market.

Often called “grey imports,” these are genuine products brought into South Africa without Meta’s official local backing. Importantly, Meta Quest headsets are not region-locked and work perfectly worldwide. However, because there is no official local support, warranty and regulatory compliance fall entirely on the retailer you choose.
